Which Goldendoodle Generation Is Right for You?

The most common question I receive is, "What generation are your Goldendoodles? Are they F1 or F1b?" Unfortunately, Facebook groups and various internet pages are filled with misinformation regarding this topic. Instead of focusing solely on generations, future puppy owners should consider the specific traits they want in their Goldendoodle puppies. F1 and F1b Goldendoodles have historically been the most common generations since they were the only ones breeders knew about. However, with knowledge comes the ability to make better choices. I have taken numerous courses on coat and color traits, and I've learned that every trait is important, from furnishing to the curl gene. Breeders can now prioritize not only health and temperament but also specific coat characteristics. For instance, Emerald is our multigenerational Goldendoodle. She has a straight coat and a traditional teddy bear face, making her look like an F1 Goldendoodle. The advantage is that she sheds very little and has a percentage of Golden Retriever genetics similar to that of an F1b Goldendoodle puppy. So, I will emphasize this again and again: don’t get too hung up on Goldendoodle generations. Instead, think about the traits you desire in a puppy. Do you prefer a Goldendoodle with a curly, wavy, or straight coat? What kind of temperament are you looking for? Don't be afraid to ask your breeder questions!
