To pluck ear hair or not pluck? Ear plucking is a controversial topic in Goldendoodles. Some groomers are all for it, while others won't touch the dog's ears and leave it to the veterinarians to care for them. We've all seen the social media posts where a dog ends up with an ear infection, and the groomer is automatically to blame. The honest truth is that the Goldendoodle probably already had an ear infection, and the groomer just exposed it. Your adorable Goldendoodle has floppy ears that grow hair. Some doodles have more hair than others. Now imagine all the moisture that hair traps, which leads to a perfect environment for bacteria to cause an infection. I pluck my doodle's ear hair and clean their ears once a week. It's maintenance, and it keeps their ears clean and healthy.
So, how do I pluck my dog's ear hair? I generously sprinkle some ear powder into one ear and ensure it's down to the hair root. I then start to pull the hair with my fingertips, working in small sections. This should not be painful. Once the hair is cleared, I take my ear cleaner, pour it inside the ear, close the flap of the ear, and massage the base of the dog's ear (it loosens up any ear wax). I then let the dog shake his or her head and take a clean cotton ball to remove any excess wax. This should be done at least once a week. If you suspect an ear infection or the ear looks red or inflamed, please don't attempt this and seek advice from your veterinarian.
